Living with Trisomy 13 - Patau's Syndrome

Callum Morgan Tarling

Born: October 2, 2003

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - 2/3rds Partial Trisomy 13 Had to share this cute YouTube video of Callum Tarling  He’s delightful, and so happy. So often we hear those are only photos shared on this site, and you can’t see how the kids are doing. Well here is a video showing a very happy child with Patau Syndrome. It nice to see some Canadian Programs and Resources that are helping the special needs communities locally in Canada.

Update 5-22-09

This year Cal attended Kindergarten at his big sister's school, South Park, here in Victoria. He has a full time Educational Assistant and receives PT, OT and SLP at school! He is also slowly getting a few words, which is very exciting. Every day is a challenge but equally a reward!

Here are some pics of Cal and a link to another beautiful youtube video of cal riding his horse at Victoria Riding for the disabled.

Cal was born 14 days late! We knew something was wrong but didn't get a full diagnosis until Cal was 1.5 years old. He learned to walk Christmas 2005, when he was 26 months! He is the happiest fellow.

His full diagnosis: is 2/3rds Partial Trisomy 13 (partial trisomy of the proximal end of chromosome 13q - all of the short arm and part of the long arm) His symptoms are Developmental delay - especially with his Gross Motor Skills, Hypotonia,

Brain Abnormalities - (agenesis of the inferior vermis, prominent 4th ventricle and prominent sulci, mild generalized cerebral atrophy), he is vocal but has no speech (we use sign language and Cal uses 15 signs), Congenital Heart Defect: ASD (Atrial Septal Defect - surgery due in 2007).

He had Phagiocephaly, we worked intensively with an Osteopath, Chiropractor and Cranial Sacral therapist and now his head is almost typical. He also had Gastroesophageal reflux but has grown out of it.
